Joe’s Surprise Pirate Yacht Party for Maddi’s Birthday Was a Total Flop

Joe Bradley really thought he was about to win Boyfriend of the Year… and somehow missed the mark by a nautical mile.

Fresh off his own over-the-top emo 30th birthday bash, Joe decided to surprise Maddi with a massive pirate-themed party on a borrowed yacht for her birthday on Southern Hospitality Season 4 Episode 9. The entire crew was dressed in full pirate regalia, waiting to pop out and yell “Happy Birthday!”

There was just one problem: Maddi explicitly told Joe she wanted a quiet, low-key day. She was exhausted after his birthday weekend and needed rest before her big international DJ gig in Punta Cana.

Joe, bless his heart, ignored the hint. He brought her coffee in bed, then lured her to the marina under the guise of a romantic kayaking date. When they arrived, the whole group jumped out screaming. Maddi’s immediate reaction? She whispered to Joe, “I wanted it to just be the two of us.”

To make matters even worse, Joe forgot to bring Maddi’s pirate costume (he left it in the truck). While everyone else was decked out, Maddi had to improvise an outfit using random yacht decorations. She handled it like a champ, but the disappointment on her face was obvious.

The entire setup screamed classic Joe: big, dramatic gestures with very little attention to what Maddi actually wanted.

Just episodes ago, Maddi was holding him accountable for his drinking and late nights. Now he’s throwing her a surprise party she didn’t ask for right when she’s mentally preparing for her first international gig.

Maddi tried to roll with it and even complimented everyone’s pirate looks, but the vibe was clear — this was not the relaxing birthday reset she needed.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group was living it up, with Lake side-eyeing Mia, Justin flirting with Charley, and Emmy somehow still making things about her drama.

Joe had the sweetest intentions, but the execution was messy boyfriend energy at its finest. After everything Maddi has done to support him this season — through his quarter-life crisis, drinking concerns, and emotional blow-ups — it feels like he still hasn’t quite learned how to put her needs first.

Will Maddi forgive the pirate party flop, or is this another sign Joe still has some growing up to do?

At this point, she might prefer a quiet night in over any more surprise yachts.

Southern Hospitality airs Thursdays at 9/8c on Bravo and streams the next day on Peacock.
