Ellie’s Brutal Friend-Zone Meltdown: João Finally Shuts It Down After Months of Mixed Signals
Ellie Dubaich’s long-running pursuit of João Franco came to a painful and awkward end in Below Deck Down Under Season 4 Episode 12. After spending the entire day off convinced they were still “on the same page,” Ellie was hit with a brutal reality check when João finally shut things down.
In a raw conversation, João made it crystal clear: they are only coworkers. He told her he wants no friendship, no chitchats, and no hugs.
Ellie walked away in tears, and João was left crying in his confessional as well. What started as flirtation has now become one of the most uncomfortable romantic rejections of the season.
Ellie Dubaich has consistently shown one major flaw this season on Below Deck Down Under: she has a very hard time reading the room — especially when it comes to romantic interest.
It started early. In Episode 4, her flirty chemistry with Ben in the galley caused her to completely ignore radio calls and service timing, leading to starving guests and frustrated Daisy.
She even admitted in confessional that Ben had slid into her DMs before the season, but she was relieved they never hooked up because he was now her boss. Still, the flirting distracted her from the job.
By Episode 5, Ellie’s bold personality was on full display during the crew night out. She openly said she wanted to “merge genetics” with João and dropped the now-infamous question: “Who amongst them squirts?”
While entertaining for viewers, it showed her tendency to push boundaries without picking up on subtle social cues.
The pattern worsened dramatically in Episode 10. After offering João a massage and dancing with him, Ellie kissed him and genuinely believed they were moving toward something romantic.
Even when João tried to gently pull back, she told Jenna in the van that they “hadn’t kissed… not yet” and that she was “easing into it.” She completely misread João’s polite responses as mutual interest.
In Episode 11, João attempted (somewhat clumsily) to clarify that he only wanted friendship, but Ellie still thought they were “on the same page.”
Instead of focusing on breakfast service, she baked him a birthday cake — another clear sign she was prioritizing her romantic fantasy over reality and work.
The painful climax came in Episode 12. After spending the entire day off convinced everything was fine, Ellie was hit with João’s direct and final rejection: “We’re coworkers. That’s it. I don’t want the friendship, chitchats, or hugs.”
She walked away in tears, shocked that the signals she had been reading for weeks were never actually there.
