Kevin Bacon to Star in Hulu Drama Pilot ‘Southern Bastards’ Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green
Kevin Bacon has been cast as the lead in Southern Bastards, a new drama pilot ordered by Hulu and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green.
The project is based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel series by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, who are also attached as executive producers.
The story follows a determined military veteran who returns to Craw County, Alabama, in search of her estranged father — only to discover a dangerous web of organized crime controlled by the region’s most successful high school football coach.
Bacon will portray Earl, the son of the late legendary Sheriff Bert, who once ruled the county with an iron fist. Described as a tough yet humble blue-collar army veteran, Earl is determined to rebuild his relationship with his daughter while confronting the corrupt underbelly of Craw County.
Reinaldo Marcus Green, best known for directing the Oscar-nominated drama King Richard and the hit biopic Bob Marley: One Love, will direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer.
The series hails from Onyx Collective, POV Entertainment, and Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media, in association with Fifth Season.
Bill Dubuque (Ozark) wrote the teleplay and is executive producing alongside Matt Olmstead, who will also act as showrunner.
Jason Aaron and Jason Latour share story credit, while additional executive producers include Layne Eskridge (POV Entertainment), Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler (Proximity Media). Simone Harris and Kate Barry serve as co-executive producers.
Bacon is coming off the recent SXSW premiere of Family Movie, a horror-comedy he directed and starred in alongside his wife Kyra Sedgwick and their children Sosie and Travis Bacon.
Green’s upcoming projects include The Punisher: One Last, a Marvel television special set to premiere on Disney+ on May 12.
Southern Bastards marks the latest high-profile collaboration for Green, whose King Richard earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and Bob Marley: One Love grossed over $180 million worldwide.
