Only Murders Stars Skip 2026 Actor Awards After Martin Short’s Daughter’s Death

Only Murders in the Building Stars Skip 2026 Actor Awards in Solidarity After Martin Short’s Daughter’s Tragic Passing

The lead trio from Hulu’s beloved comedy Only Murders in the Building—Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez—were conspicuously absent from the 2026 Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards) on March 1 in Los Angeles, even as the series earned a nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

The reason traces back to a devastating personal loss: Martin Short’s eldest daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, died by suicide at age 42 on February 23, 2026.

The licensed clinical social worker was found at her Hollywood Hills home following a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office and multiple reports from outlets including TMZ, People, and the Los Angeles Times.

The Short family released a heartfelt statement expressing profound grief: “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short.

The Short family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

Short, 75, had received two individual nominations for his portrayal of the eccentric Oliver Putnam: Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series (lost to Seth Rogen for The Studio) and the ensemble nod shared with co-stars Martin and Gomez.

During the ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium, only a still photo represented Short when the ensemble category was presented—ultimately won by The Studio.

Steve Martin, 80, and Selena Gomez, 33, opted not to attend or walk the red carpet, choosing solidarity with Short during his private mourning period, according to sources cited by People, Daily Mail, and other entertainment outlets.

The decision reflects the deep off-screen friendship that has defined the cast since the show’s debut, often highlighted in interviews and social media moments.

This comes amid other challenges for Short, who postponed upcoming dates on his comedy tour with Steve Martin (The Best of Steve Martin & Martin Short) following the tragedy. The actor has previously opened up about enduring loss, including the 2010 death of his wife, Nancy Dolman, from ovarian cancer.

The 2026 Actor Awards included poignant tributes, such as a posthumous honor for Catherine O’Hara accepted with warmth by Seth Rogen. While Only Murders in the Building continues to captivate audiences—now filming or promoting its next season—the cast’s absence underscored a rare moment of humanity in awards season, prioritizing grief and support over the spotlight.

Fans have flooded social media with messages of condolence, respecting the family’s request for privacy as Short and his loved ones navigate this unimaginable heartbreak.
