Jen Shah Breaks Silence After Prison, Reveals Marriage Crisis with Coach Shah
In her first in-depth interview since her release from federal prison, former Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jen Shah has opened up about the personal turmoil that coincided with her involvement in a telemarketing fraud scheme, including a marital crisis that left her and husband Sharrieff “Coach” Shah separated and “on the verge of divorce.”
Shah, 52, who served 33 months behind bars after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in July 2022, told People magazine that her legal troubles overlapped with deep personal pain, which she says clouded her judgment during a vulnerable period.
“We were separated. We were on the verge of a divorce,” Shah revealed. “My involvement in [the] conspiracy overlapped with [my] own personal pain.”
The couple, who married in August 1994 and share two sons, had been struggling in their relationship as the fraud scheme — which ran roughly from 2012 to 2021 — unfolded.
Shah also described being overwhelmed by grief after losing her grandmother, father, and aunt in a short span of time, while spiraling deeper into her previously diagnosed clinical depression.
“I was spiraling deeper into my previously diagnosed clinical depression,” she recalled. “I made horrible business decisions and … disregarded huge red flags.
I allowed the lines to be blurred between personal friendships and ethical business practices. And in essence, I trusted the wrong people at a very vulnerable time in my life.”
Shah was quick to emphasize that she is taking full responsibility for her actions and is not offering excuses. “It’s not like I was making good business decisions and then I woke up one morning and all of a sudden it’s like, ‘Oh, I made a bad business decision,’” she said.
“This is the totality of everything that was going on and the overlapping of what I was dealing with personally. I tried to avoid and numb all of that with alcohol and just avoid it.”
Before her guilty plea, Shah and Sharrieff publicly presented a united front. In a November 2022 episode of RHOSLC, he described the situation as “painful,” saying he wished he could “control the outcome” and “fix it.”
The following month, Sharrieff wrote a letter to the judge requesting leniency, calling Jen a “truly good woman.”
Their relationship endured the separation of her incarceration. The pair celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary together in August 2025 while she was still behind bars, and last Valentine’s Day, Shah publicly thanked her husband for “never letting go of [her] hand” and “sticking by [her] side.”
Shah was released from the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, in December 2025 — more than four years early from her original 78-month sentence. She has since been adjusting to life outside prison, including an emotional reunion with her family.
The interview marks Shah’s most candid public comments since her release, as she reflects on accountability while hinting at the personal growth that came from her experiences.
Fans of the Bravo franchise have reacted with a mix of sympathy and skepticism online, with some praising her for addressing the victims of the scheme and others questioning the timing of her reflections.
Shah has not yet confirmed whether she will return to Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, but her willingness to speak out suggests she is ready to address her past head-on.
