Virgin River Update: Mike and Charmaine Won’t Return for Season 8

Netflix’s Virgin River is heading into Season 8 without two long-running characters. Marco Grazzini, who played detective Mike Valenzuela for five seasons (the last four as a series regular), is leaving the show.

Lauren Hammersley, who’s been Charmaine Roberts since Season 1 (series regular through Season 4, then recurring), is also not returning.

Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith confirmed both departures in a Deadline interview published March 12, 2026.

“He’s not coming back for Season 8,” Smith said of Grazzini. For Hammersley/Charmaine, he noted there are “no plans” for her to appear in Season 8, though he left open the possibility of future guest appearances for both if the right story comes along.

Mike’s arc in Season 7

Mike was introduced in Season 2 as a recurring character—a cop and friend of Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson). He became a series regular in Season 3 and spent years pursuing Brie Sheridan (Zibby Allen).

They finally dated at the end of Season 5, but the relationship fell apart in Season 7 after Brie rejected his proposal and later reunited with Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth).

Mike ended the season on a lighter note, reconnecting with Victoria (Sara Canning), a medical investigator with a past crush on him.

Smith described it as a natural close to Mike’s current chapter: “Mike probably will be on the back burner for a little while… I love Marco and could see his character coming back in a more substantive role if the creative is right.” Sara Canning, who joined as recurring this season, is also not returning.

Charmaine’s long storyline wraps

Charmaine has been central to many of the show’s biggest twists—her pregnancy announcement, the paternity lie, the Season 6 abduction cliffhanger. She was missing for all of Season 7 until her rescue.

With her pregnancy arc spanning five seasons, Smith suggested the character may have reached a natural endpoint for now. He said he’d be open to bringing her back later, but “not just for more cliffhangers and more lies on pregnancies.”

Cast stability remains high

The show has kept a remarkably consistent ensemble. These two exits match the total number of series regular departures across the first six seasons (Ricky after Season 4, Dr. Cameron after Season 6). Jenny Cooper (Joey) shifted to recurring after Season 1 but continues to appear.

Since Smith became showrunner after Season 4, only one new series regular has been added: Kandyse McClure as Kaia in Season 5.

No promotions are planned for Season 8, including for long-timers like Muriel (Teryl Rothery) or Everett (John Allen Nelson), though Smith confirmed both will “definitely be back and continue to be a big presence.”

The rest of the main cast—Alexandra Breckenridge (Mel), Martin Henderson (Jack), Benjamin Hollingsworth (Brady), and others—is expected to return, even with Brady’s crash cliffhanger in the Season 7 finale.

What’s ahead

Smith emphasized focusing on the longevity of existing characters rather than big cast changes.

He’s open to introducing new faces “as characters run their course,” but no major shakeups are in the works. Some Season 7 recurrings will continue (like Cody Kearsley’s Clay), while others may be limited by scheduling.

Season 8 is already renewed, though no release date has been announced yet. The series will keep its signature mix of romance, family drama, and small-town life.

It’s a quiet shift rather than a dramatic overhaul—Mike and Charmaine get their exits, but the heart of Virgin River stays the same.
